History
There has been a fort on the site since 1797, when the Mexican Army built on the coastline. The U.S. military took ownership in 1850, the same year that California joined the U.S., and built Fort Mason. In the 20th century, Fort Mason saw an expansion of its role into the U.S. Army?s embarkation point to the Pacific, particularly during World War I and II. However, the fort saw less use after the Korean War, until the U.S. Army left in 1962. The site was redeveloped as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972 and entered a new lease of life.
