Established in 1965 by Texas philanthropist and oil financier Algur H. Meadows, the Meadows Museum is one of the southwest’s leading art institutions. After many hours spent at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid on business trips to Spain, Meadows started collecting his own art. After starting The Meadows Foundation (a foundation started in 1948 to raise money for a wellspring of resources to benefit the people of their state of Texas) with his wife, Meadows gave Southern Methodist University funds for a museum to house his Spanish collection. Since its opening in 1965, the Meadows Museum has received numerous donations and funding to expand its collection, serving a broad domestic and international audience as well as the university community.
