MBK Wedding Tips: Indian Weddings & Long-Distance Relationships
As if it wasn’t hard enough!
Planning an Indian wedding is difficult under any circumstances, but even more so if you and your future spouse are currently in a long-distance relationship. Whether you’re living apart due to a deployment, school, a job, or you met while living in different cities, the logistics can be tough. Don’t despair, though. In large part due to technology, coordinating your nuptials while far away from your partner is easier than ever! There are still some unique challenges however, so it’s important to use all the tools available.
Before you get started on any serious planning, it is vital to discuss your expectations, hopes, and desires for the big day to get everyone (including families) on the same page. As you two don’t even live in the same city, deciding on a location might lead to some debate. You’ll also want to determine which aspects are priorities for each of you. For example, perhaps you’re passionate about the look of the floral design and your beloved is very picky about the entertainment. Once you know that, you can take the lead on the vendor searches that matter to you, since the exchange of information will take longer than it typically does for a couple who lives together. When possible, a video call can help you be “together” during vendor meetings. Hiring a wedding planner will definitely help the process go smoother, so that is something to strongly consider.
One of the more difficult parts of coordinating your big day separately is the legal aspect – especially if you reside in different countries. Be sure to carefully look into local laws to confirm your marriage license is valid. If necessary, organize any visas or other permits as soon as you can. Should you be tying the knot in a different location than where either of you live, it will be crucial to know those laws as well.
Finally, don’t forget to enjoy quality time together without discussing the wedding. This is tricky even for couples who live together, but it is especially tough for those in long-distance relationships. You only have so much time together anyway, but try to carve out a phone call or outing where you just date instead of plan.
